White pillow on a bed

5 Signs You Need a Better Pillow (and What to Look For)

If you're waking up with a stiff neck, tossing all night, or reaching for a second pillow to prop yourself up, your pillow might be the problem — not your mattress.

1. You wake up with neck or shoulder pain

This usually means your pillow isn't supporting the natural curve of your neck. Side sleepers generally need a firmer, taller pillow; back sleepers need something flatter.

2. You're constantly flipping it to the "cool side"

Traditional pillows trap heat. If you're flipping yours every ten minutes, a cooling gel-infused or breathable pillow can make a real difference.

3. It's lost its shape

Most pillows lose meaningful support after 1–2 years. If yours stays flattened after fluffing, it's time.

4. You sleep better on hotel or guest pillows

That's usually a sign your regular pillow doesn't match your sleep position or firmness needs.

5. You've never matched your pillow to how you sleep

Side, back, and stomach sleepers all need different loft and firmness. Matching this alone fixes most complaints.
