Brown and white guinea pig

First-Time Guinea Pig Owner? Here's Your Starter Checklist

Guinea pigs are social, gentle, and surprisingly particular about their setup. Here's what actually matters before you bring one home.

Cage size is the #1 mistake new owners make

Pet store starter cages are almost always too small. Guinea pigs need real floor space to move around — bigger is always better here.

They need a friend

Guinea pigs are herd animals and generally do best in pairs of the same sex. A lone guinea pig can become withdrawn.

Fresh hay, daily

Unlimited timothy hay should make up the bulk of their diet, alongside fortified pellets and fresh vegetables. Hay also helps wear down their constantly growing teeth.

Vitamin C is non-negotiable

Unlike most animals, guinea pigs can't produce their own vitamin C. Look for pellets specifically fortified for guinea pigs, not generic small-animal food.

They're loud in a good way

Wheeking, popcorning, and purring are all normal guinea pig communication — not signs of distress.
